Moving into her second decade working in education, Jodi Rath has decided to begin a life of crime in her The Cast Iron Skillet Mystery Series. Her passion for both mysteries and education led her to combine the two to create her business MYS ED, where she splits her time between working as an adjunct for Ohio teachers and creating mischief in her fictional writing. She currently resides in a small, cozy village in Ohio with her husband and her nine cats.
What made you want to be a writer?
Full-time writing is something I've fantasized about since I was a five-year-old kid. No joke! I used to play "magazine" with my dolls and stuffed animals. I know--super creative name--but hey, I was only five! So, forty years later I have a cozy mystery series, write for educational blogs and publishers, wrote a screenplay and sold it, and I'm currently working on a teen series with a publishing company and some commercial scripts for cat food--go figure--I have NINE cats! And before you ask, no, I can't do the same for you. I would if I could, but I barely have time to eat or sleep as it is.
Would you read my work and let me know what you think?
Again, I barely eat or sleep and I NEVER visit with my family or friends---so, while I'd love to help, I just don't have the time to do that as much as I wish there were four clones of me (wouldn't that be terrifying? LOL) I just can't do it. Also, I'm a hot mess. Trust me, you don't want me to do that when I'm constantly drowning in my own work. BUT--suggestion--check out critique groups on Goodreads or do a search on them or join a writing affiliation--you will find a wealth of knowledge there!
Can you hook me up with a WGA (Writer's Guild of America) agent of my own?
Um, no. My agent BARELY tolerates me as it is--no, I'm being serious. I'm SUPER fortunate to have her, but I'm a handful and she could fire me at any given moment--so I'm not the gal to introduce you. Seriously, if I recommended you, she'd probably black-ball your name in the industry. BUT, you can look up all the approved WGA agents online and submit queries.
Would you introduce me to your editor?
YES! This is something I will HAPPILY do for you! Her name is Rebecca Grubb, editor EXTRAORDINAIRE! You will ADORE her AND she is a writing coach too! CLICK HERE to view her website and contact information. You may NOT want to tell her that I sent you though--let's be safe!
What do you do when you get writer's block?
Um, you may not believe me--but that hasn't happened to me YET! I'm currently knocking on wood! I can't seem to make the voices stop in my head. I dream stories---I see them everywhere. I know, I KNOW---I risk being taken off to the looney bin for the voices in my head---so SHHHHHH!
I've heard you're good at marketing, so can you give me some tips?
The only reason I know what I'm doing is that I paid for marketing courses in college and I worked in the industry for several years and my mama has over 40-years of experience in the marketing world. Marketing is NOT easy--why do you think that they say there is only ONE percent of indie writers that make a profit? It's because marketing is SO difficult! So yeah, within the last three years, I swear I'd be a millionaire if I had a buck for every person that has wanted me to give them free marketing advice. My response is to ask them if they go to the grocery store and demand the butcher give them $2000 in free steaks. I had to pay to learn and put my time in the industry---not to mention---remember, I don't eat or sleep much---so, I do SOME consultant work when I have the time and I have some courses that are online---if you are willing to pay, then if I have time---sure, otherwise, again---this chick is a hot mess with voices running through her head constantly. :-)
